Chitnis (
Patterns of Portugal) engages readers with tales touching on the coastal areas of New England, along with some landlocked areas of Vermont and New Hampshire, and coastal Nova Scotia too. This “road-tripper’s guide” is not a typical travel resource; it doesn’t list updated prices or hours of operation for restaurants or other venues. Instead, it is a chatty, informal narrative guide to perennial places of interest. It feels like a long, engaging conversation with the author, who says, from time to time, such things as, “Turn here, I think you will like this.” In addition to recommending what to pack, she advises readers on where to find lovely beaches, historical sites, and parks. Chitnis details the cultural and historical backgrounds of the featured locations, including a land acknowledgement, and weaves information about Indigenous peoples throughout the book. Dorazewski’s alluring paintings are integrated into most of the pages, effectively turning this lovely guide into a picture book for grown-ups.
VERDICT A guide that’s equally suited for taking along on a trip or reading curled up on the couch. Recommended for most travel collections, especially those near the East Coast.
