Detective Harriet Foster is back, still a bit broken after losing her son to murder and her work partner to suicide, but determined to solve homicide cases in her Chicago hometown. In this police procedural, Chicago politics take center stage, complete with crooked aldermen who keep being knocked off. After former alderman Marin Shaw is released from a three-year prison sentence, she’s the prime suspect in the murders of several of her former fellow council members, but Detective Foster and Detective Vera Li come to believe that Shaw is being framed. Their investigation exposes the sordid underbelly of Chicago politics and the police force, but their team finally comes together (better than in series starter
Hide) to solve the case. Chicago-based novelist Clark (author of the “Cass Raines Chicago Mysteries”) excels again at creating a strong sense of setting: listeners will almost smell the back alleys and visualize the City Hall schemers seen on hours of security footage. Narrator Chanté McCormick returns to narrate this sequel, providing solid voices for the characters, particularly those with Black Chicago accents.
VERDICT Recommend Clark’s series to fans of police detective procedurals and domestic suspense.
