Modern farmhouse interior design is all the rage right now, thanks in part to HGTV hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines and Jen Hatmaker, and this new volume from the editors of
Fine Homebuilding magazine is a delightful addition to the field. From the warm-feeling cover to the abundant color photographs and diagrams inside, the entire book will conjure up happy feelings for design enthusiasts. It’s more than a style book and includes ample historical context about farmhouse styles and the purposes that shaped them. Much attention is paid to modern floorplans, materials, and efficiencies. Part one has numerous examples of farmhouse styles from colonial to suburban, part two focuses solely on kitchen designs, and part three is a gallery of interior and exterior photographs of more than10 houses.
VERDICT This enjoyable book is a solid addition to most libraries; fans of modern residential architecture and farmhouse style will appreciate it. It would make for a great farmhouse interior design collection, paired with books like JP Strate and Liz Stillman’s One-Day DIY: Modern Farmhouse Furniture and Jill Winger’s The Prairie Homestead Cookbook: Simple Recipes for Heritage Cooking in Any Kitchen.
