This book deals with a very timely topic—the science and theories of making decisions that have far-reaching consequences. These decisions and the processes needed to produce the best outcomes in the long view are very different from the processes we use in day-to-day or moment-to-moment situations. Since the time line to judge the effectiveness of these choices is long, it has been much more challenging to study and evaluate them. The author uses several excellent case studies to illustrate his points. One of these—the Bin Laden raid—is especially riveting. Johnson postulates that the strategies of evaluating options include skills such as creating rich narratives of possible outcomes as well as casting a wide net for potential stakeholders in the results. George Newbern provides excellent narration with a pace and modulation of voice that is pleasant and does not distract. This audiobook is compelling—this reviewer found herself sitting in her car more than once in order to finish a section—and at only six and a half hours, it packs a lot into a short time.
VERDICT Highly recommended for all public libraries.—Gretchen Pruett, New Braunfels P.L., TX
