Grace is found on the George Washington Bridge in New York City in her underwear. She is taken to Bellevue Hospital for observation, which triggers a visit from her estranged daughter, Louise, who is angry and fearful because of Grace’s unpredictable behavior and sudden disappearances. Fearing that her mother’s problems could be hereditary, Louise gave her own child up for adoption. Now, Grace tells Louise that Melanie, the child she gave away so long ago, is in terrible danger. Louise agrees to travel across the country with Grace to save Melanie, while also secretly arranging for her mother to be institutionalized at the trip’s end. On the journey, Louise discovers that Grace has no mental health issues, but instead has a psychic gift that she’s used to rescue hundreds of people from desperate situations. Thomas (
All That’s Left of Me) builds suspense and slowly provides explanations as her novel progresses. Four talented narrators—Stacey Glemboski, Elise Arsenault, Jesse Vilinsky, and Suzanne Toren—take turns telling the story, and they all do a wonderful job with their characterizations.
VERDICT Recommended for listeners of suspense fiction and stories involving family dynamics.
