Simon Connolly has always taken pride in the close relationship he enjoys with son Jake and daughter Laney. As a stay-at-home dad, he often feels uncomfortable in the role, but he believes he has raised children who speak to him with honesty and treat others with kindness. The kids couldn't be more different—Laney is outgoing, a social butterfly, while the more reserved Jake is happy to sit on the sidelines. But a shooting at the high school turns Simon's world upside down. Quickly realizing that Jake is the only student unaccounted for, police zero in on him as a suspect. As law enforcement start to build their case and the community form their opinions of this quiet boy, the Connolly family tries not to crumble under the mounting pressures. Simon races to find his missing son while struggling to reconcile his understanding of who he believes Jake to be with the killer who shot so many innocent students.
VERDICT Reardon's prose style is compelling and makes this school shooting plot fresh. Well written and fast-paced, this debut thriller will definitely satisfy those looking for Defending Jacob read-alikes. [See Prepub Alert, 8/22/14.]
