Currie, acting as both author and character, finds himself exiled by the woman he has loved since childhood, living on a small Caribbean island where he spends time drinking when he is supposed to be writing. The story wanders from his father's death and to separation from and reuniting with Emma to a discussion of "the singularity" and his death and reincarnation. As narrated by Jake Hart, the story is told conversationally, as if being related over time to an interested stranger in a bar. There is little difference among the characters' voices, but at the same time there is very little dialog that requires differentiation.
VERDICT Place in collections where Currie's novels are popular, or where patrons clamor for stories that require contemplation.
