Mediator and fly-fishing expert Ladensohn spotlights a little-known dimension of the Renaissance polymath. Leonardo da Vinci. With eye-popping photos and many visual illustrations, this book highlights Leonardo’s studies of water and then applies that knowledge to the modern-day sport of fly-fishing. Part biography, part study of water in its many manifestations, and part humorous exposition of the author’s experiences (40 years and counting) as an avid fly-fisher, this book is written for active and aspiring fly-fishers, of course, but also for readers who are neither. It explains sport terms, and intriguing anecdotes are interspersed throughout the text. The author has a gentle, self-deprecating humor that makes this quite readable and enjoyable. There are plenty of illustrations from Leonardo’s notebooks too, which thoroughly ground readers in basic hydraulic engineering principles.
VERDICT Leonardo da Vinci aficionados and fly-fishers will rejoice. Ladensohn pulls off explaining the link between these two topics. His highly recommended book effortlessly makes the connections relevant and engaging.
