Few aspects of world society have remained unaffected by COVID. Sports and entertainment changed as their spectators, their lifeblood, were suddenly taken away. Individual sports and types of entertainment tried to adjust spontaneously, including the pro wrestling industry, which tried various methods to remain relevant, many of which can now, more than two years later, be considered creative and quite successful, leaving the sport cautiously optimistic about its future viability. There is arguably no one better to tell this story than
Inside the Ropes wrestling columnist and television producer Greenberg (
48 Hours;
Too Sweet: Inside the Wrestling Revolution). Given nearly unlimited access to all of pro wrestling’s many factions between January 1, 2020, up through the beginning of 2022, Greenberg has reviewed the industry’s day-by-day events during that time, cleverly pointing out parallels to many of the world’s political events and news.
VERDICT A timely, often humorous account, well-written in the jargon of the pro wrestling industry. A must for wrestling fans and historians, and recommended for all libraries that serve either population.
