In Williams’s fourth “Jackson Falls” romance (following
Careless Whispers), Ashiya Waters is taking over leadership of her late grandmother’s multimillion-dollar conglomerate in North Carolina. Ashiya’s ex-boyfriend, Russell Gilchrist, is assigned to help her, and he can’t turn it down if he wants a shot at being the new chief operating officer of Robidoux Holdings. When Russell discovers that Ashiya’s new business is located in the same town where his brother disappeared a decade earlier, he jumps at the chance to do some investigating on his own. He can’t forgive Ashiya for using him in the past; now he intends to use her to get closure. When Ashiya’s business and Russell’s investigation cross paths, they’ll have to work together to find answers to the past, the present, and hopefully, the future.
VERDICT Williams’s novel doesn’t shy away from family dysfunction, and sometimes there are no easy answers, keeping readers guessing until the end. Recommended for all public libraries.
