In her 11th adventure (after
Die Easy), Charlotte "Charlie" Fox, a special forces soldier-turned-bodyguard, is sent on a mission to track down her colleague and off-and-on lover Sean Meyer; he has gone off the grid in Iraq shortly after the discovery of the butchered corpse of one of the men who cold-bloodedly ended Charlie's military career. Concerned that Sean is pursuing a vendetta on her behalf, Charlie is ordered by her "close protection" agency to stop Sean by any means necessary. The bloody hunt for Sean is on as Charlie realizes she may not be the only one searching for him. Sharp is well informed about military strategies and armaments, and she crafts excellent nonstop action sequences. Her protagonist is tough, deadly, driven, and, at times, vulnerable but far from helpless.
VERDICT Owing to the novel's backstory component, it may be best for new readers to catch up with Charlie in the previous books. Series fans and Lee Child aficionados will appreciate.
