Kacie Morgan has just been dumped after a seven-year relationship. She certainly doesn't want to spend an evening at a country-and-western bar for her sister's bachelorette party. After a chance encounter with a stranger, her sister is arranging for the guy to get Kacie in on the fun. Michael MacGregor isn't interested until he sees the beautiful woman. Kacie isn't interested at all—especially with a military man who shares the same name as her ex. Still, the attraction between the two is palpable. Following what they thought would be a risk-free one-nighter, Michael asks her out, but Kacie refuses. He is a Ranger Battalion surgeon, having enlisted to keep a promise to his mother to watch over his brother, now injured during their last deployment. If only his brother wouldn't re-up, Michael might be able to win Kacie over. Both of these protagonists are arrogant at times, while the push and pull of their relationship builds until they can finally overcome their independent pasts. The bantering adds to the sexual tension.
VERDICT With dialog that is witty and realistic, this third entry in Etchison's "American Valor" series (after Here and Now) works as a stand-alone and is great for fans of military romance who don't mind a lot of sex in their novels.
