It takes an artistic eye to pull out the one shot from hundreds of rolls of developed film and find the moment that tells the story. That was the challenge and the mission of this tireless urban documentarian. Winogrand (1928–84) was a photographer of the 1960s and 1970s who roamed the city streets and athletically inserted himself into scenes to capture faces and movement and expose a heightened reality. The film relays his professional and personal life, but it also reveals the history of photography and what Winogrand did to elevate the art.
VERDICT A fascinating film about a flawed man who shares his point of view, literally, this could inspire future photojournalists or anyone with a camera to look past the selfie and toward creating a narrative with a picture. [See Trailers, LJ Winter 2018.]
