Amy Shepherd is awakened by a call from former flame Mikhail "Misha" Zaikov because he is alone, cramped—stuck by his back spasms—and he needs her. Fighting the urge to leave him as coldly as he once left her, Amy goes to him and finds a broken man in place of the virile, medal-winning, world-class figure skater with whom she'd fallen in love. As his athletic trainer, Amy offers shelter and care as Misha starts to rebuild his body and his career. With their romance rekindling, they follow Misha's skating connections to a Russian training center, where he begins intense effort for his return to competition. But a skater's life is one of hard work and hard falls, and Amy struggles to accept the harsh realities of his physical condition. Would he want a future with her more than a future on ice?
