Sue (Miranda Richardson), Gail (Zoë Wanamaker), and Linda (Phyllis Logan) have been friends since their teens. Now middle-aged, they each have a lot of problems. Sue cofounded a bridal magazine and had a longtime relationship and a son with her married business partner, who is now trying to shut her out of the company. Gail has a son recently released from prison and a mother with memory issues and is in the middle of a divorce. Linda's husband, Micky, abuses her. Micky disappears while he and Linda are on a cruise, and she is charged with his murder. The police think Linda pushed him overboard, which she denies (at first). Loyal girlfriends Gail and Sue take big (and illegal) risks to help Linda, although they themselves are barely coping with their own complicated lives.
VERDICT The constant crises and multiple plots are a bit overwhelming, although the three veteran actresses do their best to make it almost plausible. Suitable for public libraries.
