In this second “The Elemental Artist” novel, Matthew Sugiyama continues to travel toward the Toronto Depot, hoping to find his parents who left him over 15 years ago. He must also deal with his role as adoptive father to the young Akiko, whose unique Artist talent and mercurial temperament are more challenging than anything he has been up against so far. As they travel to their new destination, they reunite with old and new friends and discover that some are trying to revive the left-behind doctrines of power, greed, and religion. When Akiko disappears, Matthew begins a desperate search for her and discovers that his own story is even more mysterious than he believed. The worldbuilding continues to fascinate, both in the physical landscape, at once familiar and strange, along with the societal structures after the world has been rebuilt.
VERDICT The follow-up to Fairleigh’s Oil and Dust continues to focus on family, both found and by blood, along with facing revivals of patterns from the past, namely religion. The unique landscape and societal setups are richly detailed and immersive.
