This selection of 27 stories from Twain’s 1888 anthology includes pieces from 15 nineteenth century authors including seven of Twain’s own tales.  Among the well known pieces such as “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and Joel Chandler Harris’ “The Tar Baby”, are lesser known gems, such as Sam Davis’ “The First Piano in a Mining Camp”.  Narrated by Marsh McCandless, Marni Webb, Richard Russ, and Rich Nicholas,  all do a terrific job with their respective tales, but McCandless’ rendition of Twain’s stories are exceptional.  Unfortunately, much of the wry humor in this collection will likely be passed over by those who don’t take the time to carefully listen to the wonderfully composed tales.  Recommended for collections where Twain and his contemporaries are popular. Donna Bachowski, Orange County Library System, Orlando, Florida.
