Lucie Sterling’s niece, Kira, has been kidnapped. Lucie lives in Stanton, where all invasive technology has been prohibited, except in Green Valley, a village within the city where the residents retreated into virtual reality. And it’s into the valley that Lucie will have to go to find her missing relative. As children from Green Valley are discovered dead in Stanton, malnourished and underdeveloped, police ramp up surveillance but are hampered by the lack of technology. The society is collapsing and the children are the canaries in the coal mine. Greenberg (The Beggars’ Signwriters), half of the writing team of S.L. Grey, posits provocative questions about technology, both its overuse and underuse. The Green Valley people are so caught up in their altered reality that they live among waste, death, and filth unnoticed, but the people of Stanton have their own problems.
VERDICT Readers will appreciate the questions raised, but this is not for the squeamish. Green Valley is not a pretty place.
