Here, in Marvel Comics' first novel, Abnett returns to the world he developed with TK in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" comic book series that inspired the blockbuster film. Rocket and Groot find themselves protecting a recorder robot that is on the run from every major power in the universe, including a megacorporation that wants to use the data in the recorder to control the multiverse. The adventures are told with dry wit from the point of view of the recorder. Abnett's love for sf and Marvel's comic universe shine through as many works are referenced or parodied. Fans of the film will be right at home with the rapid-fire comedy action, but the story stands alone. The audio adaptation is well done and includes good sound effects and music cues, as well as excellent narration by dozens of voice actors.
VERDICT This outstanding full-cast work should appeal to fans of both the comic and the movie, as well as fans of humorous sf and fantasy by such authors as Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
