.assidy continues her series “The Scarecrow Murders” with book two, after
Killer in the Heartland. When bakery owner Harper Brennan hires carpenter Sam Bravano to renovate her shop, she tries her best to resist the younger man’s charms. Sam is tenacious, however, and a series of grisly events soon have Harper reluctantly accepting his protection. When it appears that their age-gap romance is the source of the threats to Harper, she must decide if a relationship is worth the risk.
VERDICT While there is a happy ending for the couple, the implication throughout the book (from the heroine herself, two of her married friends, and many of her fellow townspeople) that 45-year-old Harper is far too old to date 33-year-old Sam and that he couldn’t possibly fall in love with someone that age, is likely to sit poorly with many readers.
