This documentary introduces viewers to several French artisans who, surprisingly, still play a large part in creating haute couture garments for fashion houses such as Dior and Saint-Laurent. We meet a pleat-maker whose atelier spans three generations, a craftsman whose family has been making artificial flowers since the 1880s, and a man who creates wooden sculptures used to make hats. The film explores the fashion industry and this dying breed of specialists who are either closing their doors or being purchased and run by the fashion houses. We also see the struggles they have keeping up with changing times and expectations. For example, fashion houses used to have two collections per year and now may have a dozen or so.
VERDICT This DVD is recommended for anyone interested in the fashion industry and craftsmanship in general. A fascinating look at this little-known art that may soon disappear forever.
