This guidebook to being happy and overcoming challenges is inspired by the author’s personal journey to get out of her pandemic funk, make “chronic happiness” a thing in her life, and pay it forward. Like many, Romero struggled with her mental health during lockdown, but she used this experience to learn about studies on happiness and what experts say. She compiles a number of strategies for countering negative thoughts and retraining the brain to be more positive generally, sprinkling inspirational quotes throughout. She offers both baby steps and more complex activities and cites her sources so there’s plenty of information for adventurous readers to review. There is some religious language, but it’s not overwhelming, and Romero acknowledges mindsets and belief systems other than her own. Partly a pandemic memoir, partly a fun friend excitedly telling you about all the things she’s learned, this book is light, encouraging, and fun to read.
VERDICT A heartening and gentle read, and a welcome addition to self-help collections.
