This book is full of fun activities. Each project includes color photos, a supply list, and simple directions. “Behind the Magic” gives readers bits of interesting trivia; for instance, that the films’ costume designer lined Hogwarts students’ robes with house colors that could be seen clearly at all times, even across the Great Hall. Five levels of craft difficulty are denoted by lightning bolt symbols, from Beginner (one bolt) to Complex (five bolts). The projects are split into four sections: Journey to Hogwarts, In the Classroom, Clubs and Competitions, and Holidays at Hogwarts. Crafts include a Popping Chocolate Frog, a Mini Potted Mandrake, and decorative Potions Bottles.
VERDICT Even those who aren’t familiar with the Harry Potter books will enjoy making these projects. The book’s instructions remind readers that children should only use tools that are appropriate to their age, and that many of the projects here will require adult to help and supervise.
