Haunted Plantations of the South

Southall follows up How To Be a Ghost Hunter and Haunted Route 66 with this collection of nearly 100 haunted plantations in seven different states. This new book serves well as a travel guide to such plantations of the South but is fairly analytical and aloof as a compilation of ghost stories. If you aren't interested in being scared but would instead like to read about the history, legends, and spooky tales surrounding some of the South's fascinating old homesteads this is an excellent starting point. Most intriguing is that several of the deaths were caused by the ravages of war, disease, jealously, and slavery—and the stories are often touching. Tourists flock to the South to visit plantations not just for the beauty but for this type of deeply felt connection to the past. The only downside is that the work suffers from a lack of photos of the residences and most of Southall's references are to websites.
