Winning’s (
Burn the Negative) latest is a gory summer camp slasher featuring canceled adults as the prey. With a plum acting gig as the star of a Netflix show and a handsome fiancé, Willow thought she had it all. However, all it took to destroy that life was one misguided Tweet. A canceled Willow finds refuge at Camp Castaway, along with other people looking to unplug from their phones and hide from social media. However, no phones means no help arrives when an ax-wielding killer begins stalking campers. As secrets are revealed and campers start to literally lose their heads, Willow fights to keep hers. Anyone familiar with the Friday the 13th franchise will recognize the typical tropes found here, which include graphic violence, red herrings, and a seemingly supernatural masked killer. However, Winning and his pop culture expertise offer a modern update by integrating a timely meditation on the pros and cons of cancel culture. Narrator EJ Lavery’s portrayal of final girl Willow adds affecting emotional depth.
VERDICT A story for slasher fans who just want a gory good time. Pair with Stephen Graham Jones’s I Was a Teenage Slasher for even more bloody fun.
