In celebration of what would have been rock guitar icon Jimi Hendrix's 75th birthday, rock journalist Gaar has produced a shrewd illustrated biography that, while not an ideal introduction (see David Henderson's
'Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky for that), is a valuable addition to the mountain of volumes this artist's too-brief life has inspired. The stars of this show are the photographs, reproductions of posters and album covers. The accompanying differences between American and British releases are discussed in length with contrasts in artwork and running order considered. This illustrates the central theme of Hendrix as both visual and musical artist. Appendixes charting a time line of concert dates, album releases, and significant life events are well researched and certainly a boon to any Hendrixphile. Gaar's critical biography that accompanies this volume is written with an insight and taste not ordinarily seen in these kinds of endeavors.
VERDICT This colorful, plush-bound tome should not be the first Hendrix book to buy, but it will please patrons with an interest in the musician's life and work.
