Lifelong climber and expert hiker Green (coauthor,
Trails to the Top: 50 Colorado Front Range Mountain Hikes) introduces readers to 45 superb hikes and more than 70 waterfalls in Utah. His descriptions of the state’s ecosystem tap into the senses in such a vivid way that readers can practically feel the ground under their feet and hear the water thundering. His guidebook is well organized, and it emphasizes hiker safety and the importance of protecting national parks, where some of the featured routes are located. There are also plenty of maps, legends, and an appendix of national parks locations, their numbers, and websites. He also explains the sources and types of Utah’s waterfalls. The American Hiking Society’s “The Ten Essentials of Hiking” is a great surprise treat at the end. Green is also a photographer, and his images in this book are breathtaking.
VERDICT An excellent resource for readers who want to ensure that their hikes involve great scenic waterfalls along the way. This title is also a wonderful page-turner for armchair travelers to flip through.
