For the three teenaged Finnish girls profiled here by Oscar-nominated documentarian Vilhunen (
Do I Have To Take Care of Everything??), the making and riding of hobbyhorses—which apparently has a small but passionate following worldwide—provides them with a community of kindred souls, an outlet for their creativity (producing drawings, paintings, and short videos in addition to their hobbyhorses), and even a way of avoiding trouble and depression. Courtesy of Vilhunen's cameras, crew, and rudimentary technique, viewers spend time with these resilient young people, their friends, families, and competitors without learning the origins of hobbyhorsing's modern renaissance or even how the girls were introduced to it. What is made clear is that hobbyhorsing can be pursued with the same determination and discipline as one would apply to any sport and that doing so while standing with others doing the same can generate the solidarity and self-reliance that one needs to survive the tribulations of adolescence. Profanity but suitable for teens and up. Bonus features include theatrical trailers.
VERDICT The tag line is "Never stop doing what you love," and the filmmakers waste no time in demonstrating why that is so important, using this most unlikely pastime.
