Internationally renowned pianist Levit has made a name for himself through his recordings, performances, political outspokenness, and his humanity. With coauthor Zinnecker (a reporter for
Die Zeit) proving an adept equal partner, they have, unsurprisingly, gone far deeper than mere biography. Levit is both restless and relentless in his search for artistic truth, connection, self-knowledge, and his desire for music and a life “bigger than the piano.” The latter is less unexpected considering the classical pianist lists Eminem and Thelonious Monk as two of his biggest influences. For the artist, the COVID years, which are central to the book, were a huge challenge. Levit’s solution was a series of Twitter broadcasts, “house concerts” that kept the communication and relationship alive as they demonstrated the healing and connecting forces of art.
VERDICT Provides a revealing look into the mind of a thoughtful, searching, driven artist navigating a world in which the old rules of performance have lost their validity. Like a Levit musical performance, this book lingers long after the last note is sounded.
