Stella is an attorney charged with advocating for the best interests of a young girl caught in a messy divorce. However, the split between her parents isn’t the most traumatic thing that has happened to nine-year-old Rose recently—she also witnessed the accidental death of her nanny, who was pregnant at the time with her father’s child. Rose hasn’t spoken since. As Stella investigates Rose’s current circumstances, she keeps bumping up against the same question: was the nanny’s fall from a window an accident or a calculated act of murderous rage? Stella becomes obsessed with discovering the truth, not just because it’s her job but because she sees herself in Rose; Stella also developed traumatic mutism as a child, when she found her mother’s dead body. But Rose herself is a mystery, and Stella begins to wonder what really lies behind her silence. Readers will become absorbed in unraveling this whodunnit alongside Stella, as well as her own past.
VERDICT Featuring a finely drawn cast of suspects, brought into sharp relief by Stella’s keen observation skills, Pekkanen’s (Gone Tonight) latest is a winding mystery that makes an atmospheric setting of Washington, D.C., and its affluent suburbs. It’s one of the author’s most engrossing and satisfying thrillers yet.
