Gabrielle (
One Night with an Earl) has written a great stand-alone addition to the “Daring Ladies” series in which the romance sizzles. Lady Adeline Foster is a brilliant and progressive healer of Middle Eastern heritage, who had to relocate to a dilapidated country house when her half-brother cast her out of her family home, following their father’s death. If that is not difficult enough for Adeline to manage, her half-brother shows up to retrieve her as he has betrothed her to a moneylender to settle his debts. Daniel, the eccentric British Duke of Warwick, just wanted the peacefulness of the country to work on his inventions but ends up dealing with his beautiful neighbor’s escapist pet pig and howling dogs. Meeting Adeline sends the duke into an unplanned courtship with her to thwart her half-brother, who Daniel recognizes as his old childhood bully. However, Daniel and Adeline unwillingly realize their fake courtship might be stirring up real attraction and love.
VERDICT An enjoyable read with a great dynamic between the two main characters and a refreshing blend of cultures rarely seen in historical romances.
