Becca Muchmore decides that grad school isn't for her—she's a baker, and bake she must. Seizing an opportunity to get her foot in the door by delivering baked goods to a corporate office, she never expects to get involved in office politics. While her meek nature works for a baker, it's uncertain whether she can make it as a businesswoman. But with only a small loan from her mother to get her started, can she afford not to? Inclán's latest (One Small Thing; Intimate Beings; the "Believe Trilogy") is a lot like a baked good—sweet but not really filling. Two-dimensional characters carry a satisfactory plot; the real pleasure is in the brief chapter introductions in which the author describes particular desserts like sand tarts, blueberry muffins, or rum cake. The inclusion of a selection of recipes for the treats mentioned in the book is a welcome touch.
VERDICT An optional purchase that may appeal to book groups or women seeking light fiction.
