A virtuous widow meets a rakish man in the third book of Grey’s “First Comes Love” series (after
Gone with the Rogue). Demure widow Brina Feld is devoted to charity work and the memory of her heroic late husband, but her prim exterior hides an adventurous streak. When Zane Blacknight, the outcast of his family, suddenly inherits an earldom, he comes to the conclusion that Brina will make the perfect wife. Like any good rake, he goes about wooing her in a most ungentlemanly way—with a wager that she will marry him by the end of the season. Fortunately, the independent Brina is more than a match for this unlikely Earl, and makes her own bet that he can’t survive without his vices while he woos her.
VERDICT The book is carefully plotted, with instant chemistry between the leads, and a heroine with some depth. Readers need not have read the other books in the “First Comes Love” series to follow the story; those who enjoy gambler rakes and angst-ridden heroines will find it enjoyable.
