German crochet designer Pfoser goes big and designs 14 extra-large amigurumis. These projects range from traditional stuffed animals (a teddy bear, a rabbit, and more) to ocean creatures, such as an octopus or a starfish. The size is achieved both by using Pfoser’s recommended bulky weight yarn and by the number of stitches in each round. This approach enables crocheters who have only medium-weight yarn to still make larger-than-usual amigurumis. There are plenty of pictures of the finished projects, but there are no images that guide readers through the techniques step-by-step. Luckily, the instructions are clear, and the techniques are not complicated. There is little color work, so most projects are suitable for beginners. While all the patterns are given in U.S. crochet terms, some of the “beginner’s course” section at the end of the book uses UK crochet jargon. An upcoming reprint of the book, however, will replace these with U.S. terms.
VERDICT For crafters looking to make amigurumi toys big enough for a child to wrap their arms around and hug. There’s much to enjoy in this title, but libraries may want to wait and purchase the reprint.
