Emma Merrill has been in and out of psychiatric institutions her entire adult life. Ever since experiencing a trauma in college that she can’t remember, she has been kept in hospitals for what her mother claims is her own good. Now in her mid-30s, Emma longs to break away from her mother’s control and finally confront the painful truth about her past. Freedom arrives in the form of her childhood friend Sophie, who encourages Emma to discharge herself from the hospital and live with her in a small artists community in southern Texas. The community is in a tiny trailer park and consists of a motherly ex-hippie, an elderly metal worker, and Josh Corlen, a shy artist who is instantly smitten with Emma. Under their care and friendship, Emma begins to grow in confidence as an independent woman and a gifted artist in her own right.
