The melting of the polar ice and other widespread climate fluctuations in the near future have caused a lot of changes in the Caribbean, most notably a huge increase in the number of hurricanes that sweep through the region. Roo (last seen in Buckell's Arctic Rising) is a boat bum in the Virgin Islands now, having retired from the Caribbean Intelligence Group. A message from a former colleague puts him back in the game for one last mission: to oppose a neo-Nazi megalomaniac with a weapon that threatens the globe even more than does the weather.
VERDICT The sf in this thriller is subtle but packs a punch as the author imagines how climate change might affect the fragile ecosystems (and political systems) of the Caribbean. The thriller elements are strong with action, danger, a sexy but duplicitous blonde, and a hugely appealing hero.
