As witnesses to history, documentarians have a unique opportunity to capture events as they unfold. Through an anthology of three of her preserved works—Integration Report One (1960), A Tribute to Malcolm X (1967), and I Am Somebody (1970)—viewers get an inside look at the period's struggles, setbacks, and victories as they occurred, offering an unfiltered look at the times without the potential distortion of revisionist history. Anderson's pioneering work is also discussed in a lively interview with the filmmaker in which she outlines the challenges faced by a black woman seeking to break into a field dominated at the time by white men.
VERDICT A fine collection of restored historical pieces come back to life when the significance of their message is virtually just as relevant as it was when they were originally made.
