Djalu and Dhanggal Gurruwiwi are the elders of the Galpu clan, Aborigines living in the Northern Territory of Australia, and Djalu is perhaps the foremost master of the didgeridoo. Their story is one of tradition, subsistence, perseverance, and the conflict between a commercial economy and an indigenous culture. For decades, the Rio Tinto Mining Company has been refining bauxite on land leased from the locals. Environmental issues and the burdens of assimilation are threatening to end the traditional tribal existence. Throughout this upheaval, Djalu continues to teach all who care to visit, and his music travels the world. Narrated by James Cromwell, the film reveals stories that "are as old as time itself; the world would be foolish not to listen."
VERDICT A captivating portrait of a way of life under immense pressure from the influence of Western culture. A film of great beauty, though "the winds of change are howling." Highly recommended.
