Violent skirmishes between authorities and minorities have become commonplace in recent years. In 2010, when such incidents received less media coverage, a troubling case involving a psychologically impaired African graduate student and University of Florida (UF) campus police caused an uproar when the man was shot at his on-campus residence. This documentary by Schueller (an English professor at UF) chronicles the events leading up to, during, and following the incident while also examining related issues, such as growing tensions between minorities and authorities and the increased militarization of on-campus police. However, while the film draws attention to these matters, its overall coverage of them feels thin. At a scant 31 minutes, the program seems unduly short; elaboration of these concerns, along with the restoration of inexplicably deleted outtakes, would have made for a more thorough treatment of these vital questions.
VERDICT A well-meaning documentary that, unfortunately, skims the surface of topics that deserve more thorough and in-depth attention.
