It’s 2180, and Lieutenant Selene Genji finds herself with a front-row seat as Earth meets an explosive end. However, Genji is given a chance to save the planet when its death throes send the United Fleet officer four decades into the past. This sets the genetically engineered woman on a collision course with Kayl Owen, an Earth Guard lieutenant who joins Genji’s mission to prevent Earth’s destruction. The pair has a chance to alter the course of history as Genji knows it, but forces are willing to kill to keep Genji’s existence a secret. Andrea Emmes injects Campbell’s (Implacable) space opera with energy and emotion that brilliantly portrays a woman on a mission to save a population who fears her. Tim Fannon is convincing as a confident, albeit naive officer discovering that the organization he places faith in isn’t as benevolent as he believes. Their dual narration elevates a simplistic plot and formulaic romance into a cozy experience that delights.
VERDICT The initial “Doomed Earth” novel is predictable but stands as a fun time-travel concept with incredible narration. Recommended for fans of Campbell’s “The Lost Fleet” series and Glynn Stewart’s Ambassador for Mars.
