DEBUT]More than three months ago, 17-year-old Christopher died, and his parents, Kat and Scott Hamilton, are grieving. Scott, an attorney, still has to go to work every day, but Kat quit her job and has a hard time getting out of bed. She knows she's a different person now. A therapist hasn't helped, nor has a trip to a spa with her sister. She would just like to pull the covers over her head and never leave the house. But Scott's job forces them to socialize, and it's at a party that a figure from the past latches onto Kat. Sarah Harrison is now a wealthy widow, head of a conglomerate, and a potential client. Sarah seems to understand Kat's grief, but by the time Kat realizes Sarah has a plan for revenge, it may be too late to escape.
VERDICT McCluskey may have missed the mark with her domestic suspense debut if the intent was to frighten readers. However, she succeeds in handling the grief of a parent struggling with loss. For readers who want character-driven, heartrending stories that build in intensity.
