YA author Kline’s (Winter’s Tide) adult debut offers a heartfelt examination of what it means to be and to have a daughter. The book might be summed up by mother Beth’s thoughts about her daughter: “How strange and painful it is to have a daughter…they are so much our flesh we can barely separate ourselves. But then they grow up and away.” Beth is still worried and wondering about her wayward daughter 15 years after her disappearance. One day she finds a newspaper article with a photo of a girl named Sky, who happens to look just like the missing Julie. Sky is competing in a girls’ golf tournament, so Beth decides to watch her play, setting off a series of events that bring the two together in more ways than anticipated. While the mother-daughter relationships take prominence, Kline’s novel also explores Beth navigating middle age while Sky battles the elitism of golf. Narrators Rachel L. Jacobs (Sky) and Xe Sands (Beth) voice the characters with care and empathy; their alternating voices will keep listeners engaged.
