Douglas, the FBI agent on whom
The Silence of the Lambs' Jack Crawford was based, and Olshaker (coauthors,
Mindhunter; The Anatomy of Motive) here focus on justice gone wrong. From the hysteria of the Salem witch trials to the recent Amanda Knox trial, the authors examine cases in which "innocent until proven guilty" was not the standard used by authorities, as well as the outside forces that impacted the cases. Public outrage, police brutality, helpless defendants, and petty criminals in the wrong place are all factors that have contributed to the wrong person being found guilty. Joe Barrett does an excellent job of narrating the book; he sounds so authoritative about the cases that casual listeners may think he's the author.
VERDICT For fans of true crime, serial-killer stories both fact and fiction, and the authors' previous works.
