LeBron James, with his natural athletic talent and business savvy, is arguably the most popular professional athlete in the world. Film/TV producer Benedict’s (
Tiger Woods) research is impeccable in this biography. His sources include more than 250 interviews with former and current members of James’s inner circle. The author describes, often in great detail, James’s difficult childhood, his successful high school basketball career and ultimate superstardom in the NBA, and his marketing and business successes and failures. Benedict has the wonderful ability to put positive spins in his writing, but critical readers may be troubled with how he presents controversies involving James. For example, during game four of the 2016 NBA Finals, Golden Warrior Draymond Green and James got tangled up at half court. No call was made during the game, but the league retroactively suspended Green from playing in game five, whereas only a technical foul was called on James. The author doesn’t question the difference in punishment. Instead, he credits James with using the incident to motivate his team to win the championship.
VERDICT James’s fans will flock to this book and will enjoy it. A necessary purchase for every public library and most academic ones.
