Maggie and Clay had been friends back in high school, and while both perhaps considered that there might be more to their relationship, neither acted on their feelings. Maggie has moved back to Rocky Mountain House with her husband, Cameron, who is now good friends with Clay as well. When Maggie and Cameron are in a devastating wreck that leaves Maggie a widow and Clay without his best friend, the two find they can be comfortable with each other in their grief. The Thompson family is a large one and no stranger to loss. Clay just wants to take care of Maggie; however, she feels as if she is taking too much of his time and becoming too dependent on him. As time passes, Clay finds it harder to push his romantic feelings for Maggie to the background, yet he worries that it's too soon for Maggie to look at him as anything other than Cameron's friend.
VERDICT Enjoyable characters and emotional issues dealing with family, loss, holidays, and grief set the stage for another great series by Arend (Rocky Ride; One Sexy Ride) filled with strong men and the women they love, set in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. A companion to Arend's "Six Pack Ranch" series, with some crossover characters, though it can stand alone.
