Mazarura’s debut contemporary romance, told from the perspectives of two British Zimbabweans forced to work together at the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, abounds with sizzling chemistry and charming banter. Recent college graduate Olivia Nkomo has landed the internship of her dreams, working with the Olympic Organizing Commission in Athens; she is determined to prove herself and get a full-time job by the summer’s end. Ezekiel “Zeke” Moyo is an Olympic sprinter competing for gold in his third summer games and navigating unwanted media attention after a high-profile breakup. With a literal run-in collision as their meet-cute, Olivia and Zeke get off to a bumpy start, but the more time they spend together, the harder Zeke falls. The only problem? Zeke discovers he has competition for Olivia’s affection, in the form of his similarly smitten best friend. British actor Shaniqua Okwok skillfully voices the main characters, lending distinctive, natural-sounding accents for each.
VERDICT This swoony and heartfelt debut would be a great addition to any library’s contemporary sports romance collection. Guaranteed to appeal to fans of authors such as Jasmine Guillory, Denise Williams, or Talia Hibbert.
