Marmery (
On Wild Seas) offers an ambitious, poetic retelling of the story of Lilith, Adam’s first wife in the Garden of Eden. At first, Lilith lives blissfully with Adam, but he soon begins belittling her and decides she is beneath him. When he rapes her, she flees Eden. Having already eaten of the Tree of Knowledge, Lilith watches as she is replaced by Eve. Then, when Asherah, the Giver of Life and Queen of Heaven, goes missing, Lilith endeavors to find the missing queen and restore balance to the world. However, as she wanders from Ancient Sumer to Judea and even into the modern age, she finds that injustice runs rampant. Lara Sawalha narrates the original woman scorned, as she tries to right a corrupt world, highlighting Lilith’s tenacity and refusal to give up. This feminist take on a traditional biblical story resonates, bringing forth the voices of forgotten, used, and silenced women throughout history.
VERDICT A perfect listen for fans of Madeline Miller, Natalie Haynes, and others who have retold ancient myths from alternative perspectives.
