Johnson, a transformational coach and leadership consultant, started working on this book during a time of significant global uncertainty, at the start of the COVID pandemic. He often uses anecdotes from his own life to offer advice and techniques for leading a rewarding life while coping with global societal challenges. He also cites from scholars such as Chris Argyris, Joseph Campbell, Stephen Covey, Carl Jung, and Eckhart Tolle to support his views. The book’s 51 essays discuss a variety of topics, including dealing with difficult people, being good to oneself, becoming a better listener, improving relationships, using meditation to find peace, and navigating the thorny corporate world. Throughout this book, Johnson stresses the importance of making the most out of life through such actions as curbing self-doubt, nurturing one’s inner self, focusing on what one can control, acting with kindness, being tolerant of divergent opinions, not rashly jumping to conclusions, and always being grateful.
VERDICT There is no bibliography, nor is there a concluding chapter to reinforce the central message. However, Johnson’s book offers excellent meditation tips and practical advice to help readers live more fulfilling lives, even in times of unrest.
