Greenfield (
Breaking Bounds; Airborne) continues to capture the athletic, sculptural, and fluid movements of a wide variety of dancers in this book of nontraditional dance photography. There are no toe shoes or tutus but instead lengths of flowing fabric, stark backgrounds, reflective surfaces, and bodies caught midair performing incredible leaps and bounds. The captions are clustered every ten pages or so, allowing a large, single photo to dominate each page. The descriptions and seven-page interview of Greenfield by editor Ewing lend insight into the creation of the gravity-defying images. The artistic use of color, form, and movement in the photos can be appreciated by anyone; no dance background required. Greenfield's talent for knowing exactly when to click the shutter makes many of the pictures truly breathtaking.
VERDICT Inspiring for their technical excellence, the framing and lighting, the choice of props, and the lithe dancers, these high-quality, large-format photos combine with an elegant layout to create a beautiful book. Suitable for all readers interested in dance, sculpture, and the human form.
