Jackson delivers a book that’s a testimonial to the importance and power of determination, dreams, family, and love. Of course, it recounts significant milestones in Jackson’s trials and triumphs on her journey to becoming the first Black woman U.S. Supreme Court Justice. But this title emphasizes the point that no one succeeds alone or without grace and grit. Her successes flow from elementary school plays and high school class president to bachelor’s and law degrees from Harvard, along with notable positions in public and private legal practice. The book’s 25 chapters not only cover Jackson’s personal hard work, private moments of individual sacrifice, and resilience, but they also glimpse the proud and painful history of Black Americans insistent on seizing ownership of their ambitions and lives.

VERDICT Jackson’s story is a poignant reflection on time, place, and a nation’s history. This is a lovely, absorbing, candid, inspirational memoir. Ideal as a motivational read, particularly for young adults and especially for women and people of color.
